Happy 6 Month Birthday!!!!!!!

Holy cow! The twins are six months old today! Where has the time gone? Can you believe that the twins are six months old already? We can’t!

Being six months old also means we started the boys on cereal today! That was an adventure. Here are a few pictures of the feeding fun we had today!

Notice what a big help, big brother Christian was!!!!!!

Christian has been growing up so much lately too! He goes to all-day preschool every weekday and loves playing with all his friends there! And he hasn’t had a potty accident in weeks and is going to the bathroom all by himself now! From going potty to flushing, closing the lid and washing his hands, he has it down! Hallelujah! mommy::k and I are so proud of him, especially when he’s polite, helpful, kind and caring.

Hello?

So it’s been a real long time…

Life’s been busy, with work, church, and oh yeah…three kids under 4! But I had to write to you tonight to let you all know how proud of Christian I am! We’ve been working really hard on potty training the last few weeks because he when he starts preschool in two short weeks he has to use the potty all the time. He was doing pretty good before the twins got here but once they arrived he regressed and has been obstinate about not going to the potty!

But just a few minutes ago he ran out of the kitchen yelling “I have to go potty” and just went #1 and #2 all by himself! Oh the things we find joy in!

I promise I’ll be back with some picture galleries soon!

The Joys of Boys…

Let me start by telling you a little story from last night…

As we were getting the birthday boy, Christian, ready for bed, after we had stripped him out of his dirty clothes from the day and his pee-filled pull-up, he stopped us. Standing there butt-naked, avoiding us and the new pull-up he yelled out “Wait, Wait…not yet…I have to toot!”

…silence, a determined grimace on his face and then….PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT…followed by oodles and oodles of giggles from the little maestro.

OK, so seriously, which of you out there taught him that? :( It certainly wasn’t mommy::k and I would never do anything like that! OK, so it’s plausible that I might do something like that, but I promise, I did not teach him that! I must say, we had quite a good laugh after that ‘performace’!

Speaking of the b-day boy, here he is!

This is what a three year old looks like getting out of bed in the morning! He did get a small present from us in the morning. Some new Cars, from Tokyo Mater! His big haul will be this weekend at his He-Man themed birthday party.

Goodness, mommy::k has her hands full with all these boys in her house!

Yesterday we also took the brothers to the pediatrician for their one month check-up. Everything was fine, at the one month weigh-in here are their weights:

Joshua: 8lbs 7oz
Caleb: 7lbs 12oz

They’ve both gained 17oz over the last 11 days! We have some real body builders on our hands here. At this rate they’re gonna pass their skinny-butt brother Christian in no time!

Here they are getting their Hep. B shots. They liked that…and by liked it I mean they screamed and screamed!

All for now! More to come this on this special birthday week celebration on the blog!

Doctor, Doctor…Where Cookies go to Die…

Another day, another doctor’s appointment. That seems to be the story of our lives lately! Our appointment with the pediatric cardiologist got moved up from the 27th to Tuesday morning of this week. We had to pack everyone up at the bright and early time of 6:30am. Now that may not seem real early but after getting 3 hours of sleep Sunday night and ‘maybe’ 2 hours Monday night, 6:30am never felt so daunting! But each new day is a blessing from the Lord, so enough complaining and on to the blog entry!

After dropping off Christian, mommy::k, the twins and I journeyed across the ‘river’ to their appointment in the ‘big city’! It went well.

They even had a baby-sized blood pressure cuff! It was so cute! (Although the boys didn’t care for it so much!)

We really liked the cardiologist. He was super-friendly and answered all our questions and concerns!

He listened to Caleb’s heart, and let us know that he didn’t hear anything abnormal. Joshua was next, and after a few minutes of listening the cardiologist said he definitely heard a murmur and that he wanted to do an ECG to make a diagnosis. So Joshua and strolled down the hall to the imaging room where Craig the friendly technician took some ultrasound pictures of Joshua’s heart. After examining Joshua’s ECG the doctor let us know that he DID NOT find any structural problems and said that whatever was causing the murmur was nothing to worry about and that he didn’t need to see us again! Thank you all for your prayers!

The boys are also still growing! That regimen of breast milk and formula has really helped them bulk up! Here were their weights as of Tuesday:

Joshua – 7lbs 13oz
Caleb – 7lbs 3oz

So what does any of this have to do with cookies? Well thanks for asking! So the other night I walked into the kitchen and to my ‘horror’ I discovered a pile of Oreo carcasses drained of all their delicious white centers.

Well, I didn’t need to call C.C.S.I. (Cookie Crime Scene Investigators) to know what happened. One word…Chrisitan! He told mommy::k that he really liked Oreos and wanted some. By Oreos he meant he liked the sugary, white filling and could care less about the chocolatey cookies! And really who can blame him, that is the best part!

Sorry it took so long to post this week! Work has been nuts and sleep has been elusive! In fact, most of this post was written while attending a big fundraiser event that our company plans and executes every year for a local hospital. It’s pretty snazzy, the last two years we’ve had this really awesome Buddy Holly tribute artist. It’s just a really late night, I didn’t roll in until about 2am and thankfully my mom and dad were there for some overnight relief and I was able to hit the hay for a few hours!

And finally, HAPPY 4 WEEK BIRTHDAY to the twins!

And here he is, the world’s best BIG brother!

Stay tuned more soon…I mean real soon! More posts coming next week!

Doctor, Doctor…They Might Be Giants

And no, this isn’t Istanbul or Constantinople. OK, so they aren’t giants…not yet anyway! But if they continue to grow at the pace they were on the last few days…holy cow!

So what am I talking about? Well to give you a little back story…three weeks ago we had some babies, twin boys to be exact, Joshua was 6lbs 14oz. and Caleb was 5lbs 13oz. Like all newborns they lost weight their first few days, Caleb 10% and Joshua 12%. At this point in the story is when we were still waiting for mommy::k’s milk to come in and the boys were in the hospital under the bililights getting treated for jaundice. (see older post here) It was at this point that mommy::k’s milk started to come in and per the pediatrician we started supplimenting a little formula, and lo and behold they started to slowly gain some weight.

Fast forward a week and about a bazillion doctor’s appointments later and we’ve got some moderate weight gain. The goal is for the babies to be back up up to birth weight within two weeks of birth. They should gain about ONE ounce per day. Last Friday at two weeks old Caleb was 5lbs 12.5oz (real close) and Joshua was 6lbs 11oz (not close enough).

The peditrician wanted us to come back in on Monday for a follow-up weigh-in to see if they had passed their birth weights over the weekend. Still no beans. Caleb had gained about .5oz a day and Joshua, even less than that. So to help the boys bulk up the doctor suggested a new plan. Breastfeed one of the boys at feeding time and give the other a bottle of formula; then next feeding flip-flop who gets what so that the breastfed baby gets the bottle and the other gets the breast. That way they are both getting the extra calories of the formula and the antibodies of the breastmilk. To be quite honest, the financial ramification of feeding TWO babies formula all the time is staggering. Formula is soooooooooooooooooooooo expensive, for the really good stuff, you’re looking at $20/can. The pediatrician got us a few sample canisters of formula to start with. They also contacted their Enfamil rep who said they have a program for multiples and will send a case or two of formula per baby if we enroll in the program, which we did, so that should last us a while.

Well we went back to day and holy cow, when they told us the new weights from Monday afternoon to Thursday morning, three days, I thought their scale was broken! Are you ready for this…in the span of those four days Joshua gained 11oz! And Caleb, not to be outdone by his bigger brother gained 12oz!

Their new weights as of Thursday morning were:
Joshua : 7lbs 6oz
Caleb : 6 lbs 11oz

It just seems so crazy that they gained that much weight in just three days!

You know, I’d be lying if I told you that I hate having to feed the boys. I know that breastfeeding is a beautiful and intimate thing between a mother and a child and that as a man I will never experience that. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been told plenty of times how painful and uncomfortable it can be as well! But being able to spend that time with the boys, feeding them talking to them, just being close to them…it’s special daddy-baby time! I like it!

When we found out we were having twins mommy::k bought a nifty twin nursing pillow. It allows her to hold and feed both babies at once. Well as you can see, daddy::k can get some use out of that twin feeding pillow.

Michael Keaton, eat your heart out!

And the coolest part is that it has a pocket on the side. I’m sure they were thinking you could put lame things in there like a burp rag or the bottle when it’s empty. But my friends, as you can see, my man-mind quickly found a better use for this pocket…

Yep, a remote control holder. I bet you could even put a cold beverage in there too, or a Sports Illustrated magazine to read…maybe some beef jerky? The possibilities are endless!

On a more serious note, there is one more thing I’d like to mention. At the weigh-in today the doctor detected a faint murmur when listening to Joshua’s heart. We have an appointment with a pediatric cardiologist over at Children’s for both boys on April 27, to look into the issue. They’ll be checking out both boys so please keep them in your prayers that all is well and that it is nothing serious!

All for now! Thank You for your support and God Bless! More Soon!

There’s Something Fishy Going on Here!

4_10_2010_pinktank6

It was THIS BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I’m sure you all know some one who has a story about the time they went fishing and ‘almost’ caught the biggest fish in the world, and with each retelling the fish grows larger and the circumstances surrounding ‘said’ catch becomes more dramatic…Well Christian now has his own “The One That Got Away” story!

Last weekend Christian was lucky enough to spend the day and night with his Uncle Greg and Aunt Jaclyn. After a fun-filled day of playing with Play-doh, Uncle Greg took Christian and his awesome little fishing pole to a local pond for some fishing!

This was Christian’s first attempt at the fine art of fishing. Quite honestly, because fishing requires some patience, I’m not sure it’s really a hobby he’s going to excel at anytime soon! With Uncle Greg’s help, on Christian’s FIRST cast with his little kid pole they snagged something…something large…something very LARGE. And they reeled and they reeled some more and when they finally got it to close to shore they realized they had a BIG, almost 2 foot, gnarly catfish on the line! Obviously little kid poles weren’t meant to angle in big, gnarly fish so after fighting with it for a few minutes the line snapped and so did Christian’s young fishing career! After seeing that fish he was DONE and refused to fish anymore that evening! It’s a shame they didn’t have a camera ready to capture that Kodak moment!

As a side note, someone went back to the above mentioned pond  few days later and went fishing in the same spot Christian almost snagged the catfish and they reeled in a 27.5″ catfish, probably the same one Christian hooked!

Speaking of fish…another subtle segue as I switch gears…Christian got a new fish tank this weekend! Here’s how that happened…

We had a cat…a cat named Hubcap, and she was a mean cat. She didn’t like strangers, or Christian and although we didn’t give her the opportunity, she probably wouldn’t have liked the boys. With the new babies and the cat’s snarly attitude, the decision was made that we couldn’t keep her in the house anymore. So we decided to take her out to Nana and Papa’s house where she would have free reign of the countryside! That news upset Christian, even though the cat never lets him pet her, touch her, get within 5 feet of her or even look at her! Thus began the negotiation!

If we take the cat to Nana and Papa’s, where you can still see her and “play” with her we’ll get you a

OFFER #1
A new fish tank and ONE goldfish!
He had to think about it for a few seconds then flatly rejected it reminding us that he “loved” the cat.

OFFER #2
A  new fish tank and TWO goldfish!
Again there was some internal deliberation, but after a minute or so this offer too was rejected, but then the counterproposal…

And I quote…”I want GOLDFISH CRACKERS!”
4_10_2010_pinktank4

So at that point, being the shrewd businessman that I am said…
FINAL DEAL: A fish tank with two goldfish and a LARGE bag of goldfish crackers…

And we had a deal! He sold the poor cat down the river for a pair of goldfish and some goldfish crackers!

Last night he and I took a trip to the pet store to get the above mentioned goldfish and a tank. What a process! After being talked out of goldfish by the pet store sales people, since they are, in their words, underwater pooping machines we settled on getting some of the tropical community fish. Here’s something I didn’t know… you have to get the tank of water set up and running a few days before you can put fish in, something about letting the bacteria get established. We picked out a 5 gallon tank and then “the accessories”. I put Christian in charge of gravel color, plant color and one item to put in the tank. Here is what he chose:

4_10_2010_pinktank2

Neon pink gravel, pink plants and what else…a pirate skull. Yep, he’s definitely my boy! He really wanted a volcano, but they were out of the small volcanoes so he settled for a sweet pirate skull! It took us about an hour to get the new tank all set up when we got home last night. We have to go back in a few days to pick out a few fish to get our tank started!

OK, seriously, aren’t they the cutest babies you’ve ever seen? And NO, I’m not biased in any way shape or form!

That’s all for now! Sorry it’s been so long between posts. You’d think with all the sleep I’m not getting I’d have more time to update the blog, but it seems like anytime we’re awake we’re taking care of babies, playing with Christian or just being zombies! I know you understand! Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty more entries I’m working on. This week I’m planning on going through the birth photos and posting the adventures of that day and a big gallery! Until then..God bless!
